Health Effects of Insomnia

Insomnia is a symptoms for various sleeping disorder problems. Having long term or chronic insomnia is a serious medical sleeping problem. There are several negative health effects of insomnia and if left untreated, it could leave permanent damaging effects on the body!

If you are deprived of sleep, you are likely to notice that the frequency of your yawns will increase. However, yawning is not really associated with lack of sleep, instead yawning occurs when your brain does not receive enough oxygen.

Having not enough sleeping hours causes the body to take lighter breaths, which means lesser oxygen is absorbed by the body. And your body compensate by yawning to get the oxygen it needs. In the long run, lack of oxygen for the brain will cause irreversible brain damage.

 

Brain Slowing Down

Next, you might notice that your brain will be unable to function at it's usual capability. You will find that having lack of sleep will cause you to perform certain tasks at a slower rate.

Instead of writing a report for your boss in 30 minutes, which is your usual timing, you will notice that you might take 1 hour or even longer to perform that task. And the lesser sleep you have, the longer time you need to finish the job.

Deprivation of sleep is one of the common reasons for intelligent people to become 'stupid' overnight. Now this is a serious health effects of insomnia! However should rest is given, the intelligence is restored.

Doing physical tasks could prove difficult if you go for a long period of inadequate sleep. Instead of standing up or walking to your usual coffee store you feel lazy and is extremely unwillingly to move after sitting or lying down for a certain period.

Working out in the gym will seems like an impossible task, so is running a half marathon on the treadmill. Physical lethargy is another side effects of insomnia.

 

For 24 hours without sleep

If sleep is not given to the body for more than one full day (24 hours), sever mood swings can be observed. Even a simple task like getting a glass of water for your spouse will get you irritated. Should rest is still not given, the body starts to operate like a zombie.

 

For 48 hours without sleep

And if this goes on for 48 hours without and sleep, emotions will become uncontrollable and the irritability feeling raises to an all time high. For some, they will experience hallucinations during this period. Now that is one big negative health effects of insomnia.

 

For 72 hours without sleep

Now this is serious. There are cases where humans who were deprived of sleep for more than 72 hours had brain damage that cannot be undone and had schizophrenia. However, medical results are still unclear on this part of the results.
